[편집자] 1999년판 《최신 팝송 대백과》(삼호출판사 刊)를 헌책방에서 샀다. 모두 216곡의 팝송이 실려 있었다. 20세기말 최신 곡을 포함해 올디스 벗 구디스(Oldies But Goodies)까지 망라되어 있었다.

그중에서 딱 10곡을 선정해 소개한다. 모두 좋은 곡이지만 명곡이라 부르기에 애매한, 그러나 대중적으로 히트한 곡들이고 한국인이 사랑하던 노래란 점도 빼놓을 수 없다.

‘Toy Soldiers’는 미국 가수 마티카(Martika)의 1988년 데뷔 앨범에 수록된 곡이다. 그녀의 부모는 하바나 출신의 쿠바인. 캘리포니아주에 거주하다가 우연히 영화 <애니>에 등장하는 여러 소녀들 중 한 명으로 캐스팅되었다가 훗날 가수로 데뷔했다. 마티카 마레로(Martika Marrero)라는 이름을, 훗날 마티카로 줄였다.

코카인 중독과 싸우고 있는 한 친구의 이야기를 그렸다. “조금 망설였지만 친구 마이클에게 다가가 마약에 대해 쓰고 싶다고 말했다. 글 쓸 용기가 생긴 것은 처음이었지만 두려웠다”고 회고했다.
프로듀서 마이클 제이(Michael Jay)와 공동 작곡한 ‘Toy Soldiers’는 영국, 아일랜드, 독일, 호주에서 톱5의 히트를 기록했다. 미국에서 1위에 올라 RIAA로부터 골드 인증을 받았다. 뉴질랜드에서도 ‘Toy Silmers’란 제목으로 1위에 올랐다.
마티카의 근황을 알아보니, 2016년 호주 투어에서 언론의 호평을 받았다는 기사를 찾을 수 있었다. 여전히 활동 중이었다. 음악인 남편과 결혼해 몇 년 째 미국 오하이오의 데이튼(Dayton)에 거주하고 있다고 한다.
VH-1의 비디오 에피소드에 따르면 ‘Toy Soldiers’가 발표된 후 친구는 코카인 중독을 결국 극복했다(eventually conquered the addiction)고 전한다. 노랫말은 이렇다.
