1990년대말, 월요일이면 라디오 방송에서 DJ들이 앞다투어 틀었던 곡이 있다. 영국 밴드 리알토(Rialto)의 ‘Monday Morning 5:19’이다.
귀에 쏙 들어오는 멜로디, 중독성 있는 키보드 연주, 절제하면서 강렬한 기타연주... 매혹적인 모던 록이었다. 브릿 팝의 선두주자 오아시스(Oasis)나 블러(Blur)가 한창 인기가 있을 무렵이었다.
그러나 이 곡은 UK(영국) 차트에 오르지 못했다. 유독 한국에서 뜨거웠다. 그래서 2집 앨범은 영국이 아닌 한국에서 먼저 공개됐을 정도. 그러나 2집 이후 소식이 끊어졌다. 해체됐다는 이야기도 없다. 공식적인 활동기간은 1997~2002년까지다.
어디서 잘 살고 있겠지... 보컬인 루이스 엘리엇(Louis Eliot)은 솔로로 잠시 활동했었다. 노랫말을 소개하면 이렇다.

8시에 우리는 헤어졌습니다. 그게 제가 그녀 집을 나와 제 집으로 간 시각이죠. 그녀는 집에 있을 거라고 했습니다. 9시까지 일하러 가야했거든요. 집에 와서 목욕을 했습니다. TV 앞에서 빈둥거리며 한두 시간을 보냈습니다. 그런데 그때 그녀가 보고 싶어하는 영화가 나왔습니다.

지금은 아침 6시경입니다. 이젠 다시 전화를 걸고 싶지 않아요. 만약 지금까지 그녀가 돌아오지 않았다면 우리 사이는 끝일 테니까요. 처음에는 그녀가 담배를 사러 나간 줄 알았습니다. 아니면 고양이를 줄 우유나 음식을 사러 갔을 거라 했죠.
하지만 이제 자정이고 그녀는 아직 안 돌아왔습니다.
