[추천의 글]
‘더불어 살 수 있는 길인가?’라는 화두가 이 시대를 관통하고 있다. 수십 년에 걸친 인종차별과 인권탄압(Apartheid)으로 전(全) 세계 인류의 수치로 여겨져 왔던 남아공이 분쟁과 내전으로 얼룩진 과거를 청산하고 흑백공존과 사회통합의 길로 나선 것은 20세기 말에 일어난 또 다른 기적이었다.
그 한복판에 우리 시대의 위인 넬슨 만델라 대통령이 있다. 27년에 걸친 투옥생활, 흑인에 대한 가혹한 인종차별을 겪고도 복수심이 아니라 화해와 공존에의 신념으로 새로운 나라 건설에 나섰던 그를 보면 우리는 존경받는 정치지도자들이 만드는 희망의 위대한 힘을 발견하게 된다.
1994년 5월 프리토리아에서 거행된 만델라 대통령의 취임 축하행사 연설은 다시 읽어보아도 우리 가슴을 설레게 하는 힘이 있다. 과장되지 않으면서도 진실을 이야기한다. 백인에게 용서를, 흑인에게는 자유를 선언하며 함께 살아가고 가꿔야 할 남아공의 미래에 대한 분명한 비전을 제시하고 있다. 그리하여 그의 온화한 미소를 우리로 하여금 사랑하게 만든다.

Your Majesties, Your Highnesses, Distinguished Guests, Comrades and Friends:
Today, all of us do, by our presence here, and by our celebrations in other parts of our country and the world, confer glory and hope to newborn liberty.
Out of the experience of an extraordinary human disaster that lasted too long, must be born a society of which all humanity will be proud.
Our daily deeds as ordinary South Africans must produce an actual South African reality that will reinforce humanity’s belief in justice, strengthen its confidence in the nobility of the human soul and sustain all our hopes for a glorious life for all.
All this we owe both to ourselves and to the peoples of the world who are so well represented here today.
To my compatriots, I have no hesitation in saying that each one of us is as intimately attached to the soil of this beautiful country as are the famous jacaranda trees of Pretoria and the mimosa trees of the bushveld.
Each time one of us touches the soil of this land, we feel a sense of personal renewal. The national mood changes as the seasons change.
We are moved by a sense of joy and exhilaration when the grass turns green and the flowers bloom.
That spiritual and physical oneness we all share with this common homeland explains the depth of the pain we all carried in our hearts as we saw our country tear itself apart in a terrible conflict, and as we saw it spurned, outlawed and isolated by the peoples of the world, precisely because it has become the universal base of the pernicious ideology and practice of racism and racial oppression.
We, the people of South Africa, feel fulfilled that humanity has taken us back into its bosom, that we, who were outlaws not so long ago, have today been given the rare privilege to be host to the nations of the world on our own soil.
We thank all our distinguished international guests for having come to take possession with the people of our country of what is, after all, a common victory for justice, for peace, for human dignity.
We trust that you will continue to stand by us as we tackle the challenges of building peace, prosperity, non-sexism, non-racialism and democracy.
We deeply appreciate the role that the masses of our people and their political mass democratic, religious, women, youth, business, traditional and other leaders have played to bring about this conclusion. Not least among them is my Second Deputy President, the Honorable F.W. de Klerk.
We would also like to pay tribute to our security forces, in all their ranks, for the distinguished role they have played in securing our first democratic elections and the transition to democracy, from blood-thirsty forces which still refuse to see the light.
The time for the healing of the wounds has come.
The moment to bridge the chasms that divide us has come.
The time to build is upon us.
We have, at last, achieved our political emancipation. We pledge ourselves to liberate all our people from the continuing bondage of poverty, deprivation, suffering, gender and other discrimination.
We succeeded to take our last steps to freedom in conditions of relative peace. We commit ourselves to the construction of a complete, just and lasting peace.
We have triumphed in the effort to implant hope in the breasts of the millions of our people. We enter into a covenant that we shall build the society in which all South Africans, both black and white, will be able to walk tall, without any fear in their hearts, assured of their inalienable right to human dignity--a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world.
As a token of its commitment to the renewal of our country, the new Interim Government of National Unity will, as a matter of urgency, address the issue of amnesty for various categories of our people who are currently serving terms of imprisonment.
We dedicate this day to all the heroes and heroines in this country and the rest of the world who sacrificed in many ways and surrendered their lives so that we could be free.
Their dreams have become reality. Freedom is their reward.
We are both humbled and elevated by the honor and privilege that you, the people of South Africa, have bestowed on us, as the first President of a united, democratic, non-racial and non-sexist South Africa, to lead our country out of the valley of darkness.
We understand it still that there is no easy road to freedom.
We know it well that none of us acting alone can achieve success.
We must therefore act together as a united people, for national reconciliation, for nation building, for the birth of a new world.
Let there be justice for all.
Let there be peace for all.
Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.
Let each know that for each the body, the mind and the soul have been freed to fulfill themselves.
Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another and suffer the indignity of being the skunk of the world.
Let freedom reign.
The sun shall never set on so glorious a human achievement!

우리 모두를 위한 평화가 있게 하소서

존경하는 신사, 숙녀와 동지 그리고 친구 여러분.
오늘 우리 모두는 이 자리에서 우리나라와 전 세계의 보다 나은 발전을 축하하고 새로운 자유국가 탄생에 대한 영광과 희망을 주기 위해 모였습니다.
저는 오랫동안 이어져 왔던 인류의 끔찍한 고통과 경험을 통해 모든 인류가 자랑스러워 할 수 있는 사회가 필요하다는 것을 깨달았습니다.
남아프리카 공화국의 국민으로서 하루 일과를 통해 우리는 반드시 정의 안에서 인권존중에 대한 생각을 복원해야 되고, 고귀한 인간의 영혼 안에서 자부심을 길러야 하며 우리 모두의 영광스러운 삶을 위해 우리의 희망은 지속돼야 할 것입니다.
이 자리를 빌려 이 광경을 보고 계시는 전 세계의 모든 분과 이 자리에 참석하신 모든 분께 다시 한 번 감사를 드립니다.
또한 저는 우리 동포 모두에게 프리토리아의 자카란다 나무와 총림지대의 함수초로 유명한 우리나라의 절친한 국민이 되셨다는 것을 주저 없이 말하겠습니다.
우리 국민 중 하나가 조국의 흙을 만지고 느낄 때마다 우리는 한 국민의 새로운 시작을 느낄 것입니다. 국가의 분위기는 계절의 변화처럼 바뀌어야 합니다.
우리는 잔디들이 푸르러지고 꽃이 피는 이때 기쁨과 흥분에 겨워 살아갑니다. 그리고 그 기쁨과 흥분은 참혹한 마찰로 인해 갈라져 버린 조국, 인종차별과 그 외 유해한 여러 가지 이론 때문에 버려지고 법에 방치되어 소외된 사람들과 공존해 왔던 우리를 설명해 줍니다.
남아프리카공화국의 국민들은 얼마 전 박탈당했던 우리의 인간 존엄성이 오늘날 우리의 가슴 속 깊은 곳에 우리가 조국의 주인이라는 사실을 깨닫게 해준 것에 대해 만족스러워 할 것입니다.
저희는 하나의 일반적인 정의, 평화와 인간 존엄성의 승리의 자리에 저희 국민과 같이 해주신 전 세계에서 오신 모든 고명한 인사께 경의를 표합니다.
저희는 이 광경을 지켜보고 계시는 모든 분이 계속 우리나라의 평화, 번영, 반 성적차별, 반 인종차별 그리고 민주주의 정착을 도와주시리라 믿고 있습니다.
저희는 저희 국민과 그들의 민주정당, 종교, 여자, 어린 아이들, 사업, 전통과 다른 리더들이 하나로 뭉쳐 이 같은 결론을 내려주게 한 것에 대해 깊은 감사를 보냅니다. 그들 중 한명인 존경스러운 부통령 F.W de Klerk에게도 깊은 감사를 보냅니다.
또 저희는 빛으로 들어오길 거부하는 피에 굶주린 집단으로부터 우리나라의 첫 번째 민주적인 투표와 민주주의 국가의 전환 과정을 지키기 위해 힘써준 모든 방위군에게 깊은 감사를 보냅니다.
우리 모두의 상처를 치료할 수 있는 시간이 왔습니다. 우리를 갈라놓은 공간들을 채울 다리를 놓을 시간이 왔습니다. 새 시작을 할 시간이 우리에게 왔습니다. 저희는 마침내 법적인 평등을 이룩했습니다.
저희는 모든 사람이 가난, 탈취, 고통, 성적차별로부터 해방될 수 있도록 노력하겠습니다.
저희는 평화 속에서 자유를 위한 마지막 발걸음을 내디뎠습니다. 저희는 지속적인 평화 정착과 모든 것의 마지막 완성을 약속드립니다.
저희는 수백만 명의 가슴 속에 희망을 불어넣는 데 성공하였습니다. 우리는 백인과 흑인을 포함한 모든 남아프리카 공화국 사람들이 가슴 속에 두려움 없이 당당히 걷을 수 있고 결코 남에게 줄 수 없는 인간의 존엄성을 보장받는 나라, 본국 안에서 그리고 전 세계와 평화롭게 지내는 장밋빛 나라를 만들겠다는 다짐 앞에 섰습니다.
우리나라의 새 출발의 징후로서 새로운 조국의 정치 연합은 지금 감옥에서 여러 가지 사유로 구금되어 있는 많은 사람에게 사면령을 내려드리겠습니다.
저희는 모든 영웅과 우리의 자유를 위해 희생해 주신 다른 나라의 많은 사람에게 이날을 바칩니다. 그들의 꿈은 마침내 실현되었습니다.
자유는 그들의 노력의 대가입니다. 미약하기도 유능하기도 한 국민들이 어둠의 계곡에서 빠져나갈 민주적, 반 인종차별, 반 남녀차별의 국가 남아프리카 공화국의 연합 대통령을 선출했습니다.
그러나 우리는 자유의 길이 결코 쉽지 않다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 우리는 협동하지 않고서는 성공하기 어렵다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 그러므로 우리는 조국의 조화, 재건과 새로운 세계의 협동을 위해 반드시 협력해야 합니다.
우리 모두를 위한 정의가 있게 하소서.
우리 모두를 위한 평화가 있게 하소서.
우리 모두를 위한 일, 양식, 물 그리고 소금이 있게 하소서.
우리 모두가 우리 각자의 육체와 영혼이 이미 자유로워졌다는 사실을 깨닫게 하소서.
이제 우리가 다시는 한 사람이 다른 사람을 억압하고 모욕하는 일이 없게 하소서.
자유여 영원하라.
인류의 영광스러운 업적 위에 태양은 영원히 지지 않으리!
