‘Life Is a Lemon and I Want My Money Back’은 1993년 발매된 미트 로프(Meat Loaf)의 첫번째 싱글로 라디오 전파를 탔다. 이 곡은 앨범 《Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell》에 실렸다. US 빌보드 앨범 록 트랙차트에서 16위를 기록했다.
이 앨범에 실린 ‘I'd do anything for love(but I won't do that)’가 공전의 히트를 기록하며 그의 생애 첫 싱글 차트 정상을 안겼다. 앨범은 500만장이 팔렸다.

구글을 검색해 보니 미국인들도 잘 모르겠다는 반응이다. 한 네티즌의 해석 중에 이런게 눈에 띈다. ‘자신의 불만족스런 삶을 돌려주고 싶어하고 비슷한 값어치로 환불받고 싶다’는 의미라는 것이다.

가수 미트 로프는 팝 록 뮤지션이다. 1946년 생으로 미국 텍사스 달라스가 고향. 본명은 마빈 리 어데이(Marvin Lee Aday). 별명은 고깃덩어리. 미르 로프는 곱게 다진 고기, 혹은 양파 등을 함께 섞어 빵 모양으로 만든 뒤 오븐에 구운 고기를 의미한다. 갑자기 군침이 돈다. 몸집이 거구라서 붙여졌을까. 성향이 풍부하다. 팝 가수라기보다 팝 오페라, 혹은 팝 록 가수에 가깝다.
이 곡의 가사는 매우 심각하고 때로 심오하게 들린다. 어쩌면 비관론으로 가득차 있지만 그럼에도 재미있는 상상력으로 이끈다. 사랑, 섹스, 친구, 신, 유년기와 미래를 포함한 인생의 굴곡들이 갖가지 ‘결함(defect)’으로 확인된다.
하지만 이런 심각한 감정을 수수께끼 같은 재치와 은유로 감싸고 있는데 아마도 박력있는 로커의 음성 때문이 아닐까. 예컨데 여성 내레이터가 운을 띄우면 미트 로프가 받아서 열띤 함성과 함께 답하는, 이른바 콜 앤 리스판스 비트(call-and-response bit)로 확장시켜 8분짜리 대곡으로 완성한다. 곡이 지루하지 않고 한편의 작은 오페라처럼 즐겁다. 곡은 모두 프로듀서인 짐 스테인만(Jim Steinman)이 작곡했다.
