새로운 해는 언제나 그렇듯 새로움으로 설렌다. 한 해 동안 자신을 괴롭혔던 아픔을 다 잊고 변화된 자신과 세계를 꿈꾼다. 팝송 중에서도 ‘뉴 이어 송(New Year Song)’이 많다. 번역하자면 ‘해맞이 노래’라고 해야 할까. 지난 2014년 12월 31일 미국의 《빌보드》지가 온라인을 통해 ‘20(and 15) songs about new year's)’를 선정했다.

머라이어 캐리의 ‘올드 랭 사인’ 버전은 2010년 발매된 앨범 《Merry Christmas II You》에 실렸다. ‘올드 랭 사인’은 스코틀랜드 방언이다. ‘old long since(ago)’라는 뜻. 1940년대 아동문학가 강소천은 ‘올드 랭 사인’을 이렇게 번역했다.

우리에겐 ‘졸업식 노래’로 친숙하지만 일제 강점기, 대한민국 임시정부 시절에는 이 노래의 멜로디에다 애국가 가사를 붙여 망국의 설움을 달랬다. 우리에겐 너무나 각별한 노래다.
