"I'll Be Missing You"는 20년 전인 1997년 3월 9일 사망한 크리스토퍼 월러스 (Christopher "The Notorious B.I.G" Wallace)를 추억하기 위해 한때 그의 멘토였던 퍼프 대디(Puff Daddy)와 크리스토퍼의 미망인 페이스 에반스(Faith Evans)가 함께 만들었다.
이 노래는 1990년대 힙합의 전설인 크리스토퍼 월러스 혹은 ‘The Notorious B.I.G’(Biggie Smalls라는 애칭으로 불렸다.)를 추억하기 위해 만든 곡이다. 래퍼 ‘The Notorious B.I.G’는 《Ready to Die》와 《Life after Death》와 같은 앨범을 통해 힙합계를 강타했던 인물. "Juicy", "Big Poppa", "Stay With Me", "Hypnotize(최면술)", "Mo Money Mo Problems(돈을 더 많이(more) 가진다는 것은 더 많은 문제점을 낳는다는 미국 속어)" 등이 큰 인기를 끌었다. 그러나 미국의 동부와 서부 래퍼들이 서로 반목하며 다투던 시절, 그는 의문의 총성과 함께 사망했다.

이 노래가 주목을 받은 이유 중 하나는 영국 뮤지션 스팅(Sting)이 참여하는 3인조 그룹 더 폴리스(The Police)의 1983년 히트곡 "Every Breath You Take"의 멜로디를 가져와 다시 불렀다는 점이다. "Every Breath You Take"는 스팅의 ‘인생곡’이라고 할 만큼 대표곡. 세계적인 히트곡이며 한국에서도 큰 인기를 얻었다. 영국의 UB40 같은 뮤지션도 이 곡을 리바이벌했었다. 그러나 스팅은 퍼프 대디가 자신의 로큰롤을 ‘랩 발라드’로 다시 부른 것을 마다하지 않았고 기꺼이 같은 무대에 서기도 했다.

앞서 말했듯이 "I'll Be Missing You"는 요절한 비기 스몰즈(Biggie Smalls)에게 받쳐졌다. "너는 천국에 있다는 걸 알아. 우리가 널 위해 기도하는 동안 웃으며 우릴 내려다 볼거야"라는 가사와 함께, “힙합 가수는 지나치게 이기적인 감상(above self-serving sentimentality)에 빠져 있다고 생각하는 이들을 향해 ‘그렇지 않다’”고 주장하는 곡이다.
"I'll Be Missing You"는 힙합의 대중화에 크게 기여했다는 평가를 받는다. 엄청난 히트를 거뒀기 때문이다. 위키피디아에 따르면 1997년 미국과 영국은 물론 호주, 아일랜드, 독일, 이탈리아, 네덜란드, 뉴질랜드, 스페인, 스웨덴, 스위스, 오스트리아, 벨기에, 노르웨이, 덴마크, 폴란드 등지에서 #1위를 차지했다.
또한 빌보드 핫 100 차트 역사상 몇 안 되는 ‘데뷔 1위곡’ 중 하나로 13년 후 미국 ‘힙합 황제’ 에미넴(Eminem)의 "Not Afraid", 그리고 올해 등장한 신인 DJ칼리드(Khaled)의 "I'm The One"이 등장하기 전까지 유일한 데뷔 1위 랩송이었다.
