미국 음악잡지 《롤링스톤》이 지난 2004년 야심찬 결과물을 내놓았다. The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. 해석하자면 ‘역사상 가장 위대한 500곡’.
1년 전인 2003년 내놓은 ‘The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time’의 후속작이었다.

이 리스트를 두고 많은 팝 팬들이 환호했음은 물론이다. 곡 선정은 172명의 음악가와 평론가, 음악산업 종사자들의 투표로 결정했다고 한다.
