영국의 유력 온라인 신문 《인디펜던트》가 지난 1월 19일 클래식 음악에 바탕둔 팝송 10곡을 선정했다. 여러 평론가들이 곡 선정에 참여했다. 한국인이 좋아하는 음악이 포함돼 매우 흥미롭다. 원곡인 클래식과 팝송을 모두 소개하면 어떨까.

1. ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’, Procul Harum, 1967: JS Bach, ‘Air’ (known as ‘Air on a G String’).
영국산(産) 록 밴드 프로콜 하럼(Procul Harum)이 1967년에 만든 ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’은 바흐(JS Bach)의 그 유명한 G선상의 아리아(Air on a G String)를 배경으로 만들었다.
이 곡은 ‘G선상의 아리아’엔 미치지 못할 지라도 20세기 팝의 명곡 중 하나가 되었다.
1967년 6월 8일 영국 싱글 차트 1위에 6주 연속 올랐다. 또 별다른 프로모션 없이 미국 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서 5위에 올랐다. 전 세계적으로 1000만장 이상의 싱글이 팔렸다고 한다.

2. ‘I Believe in Father Christmas’, Greg Lake, 1975: ‘Troika’ from Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kije.
러시아 작곡가 프로코피예프의 ‘키제 중위’ 모음곡 가운데 한국인의 귀에 익은 ‘트로이카’가 포함된 작품이다. ‘I believe in Father Christmas’는 1975년 발표돼 영국 싱글 2위에 올랐다. 흔히 크리스마스 캐롤 같은 음악으로 분류되지만 실은 크리스마스 상업화에 맞서기 위해 곡을 만들었다고 한다. 영국 뮤지션 그레그 레이크(Greg Lake)가 노래했다. 가사엔 어린 시절 순진무구함을 잃어버린 이야기가 담겨 있다.
