NASA의 마스(Mars 2020)는 내년 7월 화성을 탐사한다. 마스 2020의 역할은 생명의 흔적을 찾는 일이다. 지구인에게 화성은 여전히 메마른 사막, 척박한 행성에 불과하지만 과학자들은 화성에, 생명체의 흔적이 있지 않을까 꿈에 부풀어 있다.
화성에는 강과 호수의 흔적이 뚜렷하게 남아 있는 것으로 관측된다. 생명체와 물이 존재했으리라는 것이다. 마스 2020을 통해 화성에 원시 생명이 있었다는 증거를 찾게 된다면 우주 역사에 신기원을 이루게 된다. 어쩌면 생명체의 흔적, 문명의 흔적이 발견될지 누가 알랴.

문득 3년 전 사망한 데이비드 보위의 노래 ‘Life on Mars?’가 떠오른다. 1971년 곡. 보위의 상징. 앨범 《Hunky Dory》에 실렸는데 나중 인기를 끌면서 1973년 다시 싱글로 발매되었다. 차트에 3위까지 올랐고 13주 동안 머물렀다.
무겁고 낮은, 들쑥날쑥한 음계, 불협화음...피아노 연주가 일품이다. 날카로운 기타 사운드는 어떤가. 강약의 흐름이 듣는이의 마음을 죈다.
노랫말이 난해하다. 화성에서의 삶이 타이틀이지만 화성, 행성, 은하계, 우주 이야기는 없다. 가정폭력을 당하고 있는 한 소녀의 이야기. 자신이 경험한 이 모든 것들이 화성에 가도 똑같이 있을까, 질문을 던진다.
첫 소절 중간부분. ‘소녀의 친구는 어디에도 없고, 지금 소녀는 가라앉은 꿈 사이를 걷고 있어. 가장 잘 보이는 좌석에 앉아 은색 스크린에 집중했지만 영화는 슬프고 지루할 뿐. 그런 삶을 10번은 더 살아봤기에...’
이 대목에 울컥하는 느낌. 그래, 화성엔 정말 생명이 있을까.

정말 별 볼일 없는 일. 칙칙한 머리색을 가진 소녀에겐 말이지. 소녀의 엄마는 "안 돼"라고 소리 지르고 아빠는 나가라고 말했어. 소녀의 친구는 어디에도 없고, 지금 소녀는 가라앉은 꿈 사이를 걷고 있어. 가장 잘 보이는 좌석에 앉아 은색 스크린에 집중했지만 영화는 슬프고 지루할 뿐. 그런 삶을 10번은 더 살아봤기에 그녀는 그 멍청이들의 눈에 침을 뱉을 수도 있었어. 그들이 그녀에게 집중하라고 말할 때 말이야.

무도회장에서 싸우고 있는 선원들. 세상에! 저 원시인들 좀 봐봐. 이건 지상 최고의 기이한 쇼야. 저 집행관을 좀 봐봐. 엉뚱한 사람을 때리고 있잖아. 오 저런! 저 인간은 지금 상황을 알기나 할까. 자기가 가장 핫한 쇼에 나오고 있다는 걸. 화성에도 생명이 있을까?
